SAM

(ZAHIDA’S SON)

Sam has a real zest for life. He is currently studying business while managing Jennifer’s shop. His mam, Zahida, is one of Jennifer's best friends.

He witnessed his mother have no financial independence, and with that saw his father control her in many ways. Seeing his mother’s self-esteem being stripped away over the years, Sam encouraged her alongside her close friends to consider leaving her husband, which she eventually did.

Sam is a proud feminist and stands proudly beside his now entrepreneurial mam, who is rebuilding her life. He supports female equality. He doesn’t find his masculinity is threatened by women who are earning more, or have more material things than he does. He knows, having being parented well by his mother, that he has many qualities other than financial that is beneficial and attractive to a woman, that is kindness, respect, support, great listener and communicator, they are characteristics money can’t buy.

  1. What has shaped Sam's approach to women differently from his father's?

  2. What do you think of Sam openly stating he is a feminist?

  3. Sam chose a different approach from his father, in doing so, could he inspire change in the generation before him?

  4. Imagine your partner earns more than you.  How would that affect your sense of confidence, ego, contribution, or balance in the relationship?

  5. How much do family attitudes about income shape a relationship?  Could focusing less on money and more on character and contribution make a difference?

  6. What might change if we stopped labelling roles as "male" or "female" and focused on the impact instead?
