SAM

(ZAHIDA’S SON)

Sam is a very entrepreneurial young gentleman. He has a real zest for life and has big dreams for himself. He is currently studying at university while managing for Jennifer’s shop. His mam, Zahida, is one of Jennifers best friends.

He witnessed his mother have no financial independence, and with that saw his father control her in many ways. Seeing his mother’s self-esteem being stripped away over the years, Sam encouraged her alongside her close friends to consider leaving her husband, which she eventually did.

Sam is a proud feminist and stands proudly beside his now entrepreneurial mam, who has rebuilt her life. He supports female equality. He doesn’t find his masculinity is threatened by women who are earning more, or have more material things than he does. He knows, having being mentored by his mother, that he has many qualities other than financial that is beneficial and attractive to a woman, that is kindness, respect, support, great listener and communicator, they are characteristics money can’t buy.

  1. Why do you think that Sam hasn’t inherited his father’s old way of treating women?

  2. What do you think of Sam openly stating he is a feminist? Do you think it is brave and if so, why?

  3. Do you think that Sam has the capacity to change his dad’s old behaviour. If so, how can he help change his father’s way of treating women?

  4. How would you feel, as a man, if your partner was earning more than you?

  5. Do you think that parents, family, need to change their way of looking at a man earning less? Can they be the cause of break ups? Do you think they need to look beyond financial earnings to see qualities a man can bring to a relationship in this day in age?
